Last Tuesday, the Discovering Science class went to the Newtown Creek Waste Water Treatment Plant in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. There they learned how complicated and important modern waste water treatment is. There was a time in NYC when household waste water from kitchens and bathrooms flowed into canals behind homes. Today we have 14 waste water treatment plants that treat 1.3 billion gallons of water a day! It was an informative and eye-opening trip.
