Pathfinders: Health and Nutrition
Pathfinders
offers an array of internships to high school students of the Yeshivah of
Flatbush. For students such as Allison Tawil and Miriam Einhorn, who are
interested in health and nutrition, what better internship than one by a
Registered Dietitian? In their internship with Karen Moreno, a nutritionist and
alumni of YOF (2005), they are exposed to the ins and outs of running a
business.
“The exposure we
[Allison and Miriam] are receiving in this internship is preparing us not only
for college, but also for our future. It is giving us the tools to not only lead
a healthy life, but also to learn how to start a business once we finish
college. In essence it’s teaching us about ‘the outside world.’ ”
Karen has
assigned her interns various jobs and tasks to fulfill in which they learn many
intriguing facts about not only keeping their own body healthy but also
learning how to spread this information to others. One example is the weekly social
media posts they are supposed to prepare in which they find recent nutrition
studies, health facts, and recipes that will later be posted on Twitter and
Facebook.
“We [Allison and
Miriam] are extremely appreciative that we have been given this opportunity to
learn so many new things; even if we don’t pursue a career in nutrition we
still have gained so much from this internship.”

Yachad Play: High School Musical
The Yeshivah of Flatbush held its annual Yachad Play on March 29, 2012. It was an evening filled with a lot of excitement, dancing and singing when the Yachad members together with students of the Yeshivah of Flatbush put on High School Musical. The directors, seniors Lauren Zalta and Rosette Shammah worked countless hours with the students and the Yachad members to make sure that everyone was having fun. At the end of the night when there was dancing in the gym, there was not one person who was not smiling.
When working with Yachad members to put on this production, students learned that the members are just regular people and that just like us, they like to have fun. Many of them have talents such as singing, dancing, playing guitar and even drums that they would like to show off, so every year when the Yeshivah of Flatbush does their play, they get excited that they will be able to showcase their talents. It was truly an evening of enjoyment and excitement! ~ Rachelle Gersh
Cooking for a Cause with Kids of Courage
This week, eighth grade parents Mrs. Adele Laboz and Mrs. Jacqueline Marcos, mothers of Jack and Isaac, taught us how to prepare black bean empanads. This event was generously sponsored by them. At the same time- under the direction of Mrs Sara Ovadia, the Tzeddakah Commission decorated cookies with children from Kids of Courage. All the food went to the SBH pantry.
Students learn to prepare a variety of entrees, dinners, and desserts while participating. All of the food prepared in these events are sent to needy families who can then enjoy delicious homemade dinners. For more information about this commission, read this previous post: http://www.myflatbushlife.com/2011/10/helping-against-hunger.html
